Vocabulary 3. Taxonomy in Academic Paragraphs

Connecting or overlapping taxonomies

In academic paragraphs and texts, there are often meaning relations between words in two or more different taxonomies. So, there are not only relations between words in one hierarchy, but also between words across two or more hierarchies. These overlapping hierarchies may be in one or two paragraphs and across whole texts.

Composition related to Classification
A part or aspect of a concept or object in a short composition hierarchy may later be introduced, either by the same word or a synonym, into a classification hierarchy and analysed as a type.

Classification related to Composition
A general class or concept may be analysed into many types, at many levels in a classification hierarchy with no one type analysed in detail. Later, one of these types may be selected for analysis in a deep composition hierarchy as in the Example.
