There are three different kinds of meaning relations between vocabulary or, more technically, lexical items. Ideas and information can be developed or linked across a text and paragraph by these three types of meaning relations which create three types of lexical cohesion.

Vocabulary - Lexical Cohesion

Type 1. Repetition The simplest vocabulary relation where related words are the same. chain

Type 2. Synonymy

More complex relations where related words have similar or opposite meanings. chain
Type 3. Taxonomy The most complex relation where related words are at different levels of meaning. taxonomy symbol
