Structure

The field trip report has a clear structure which is helpful for when you come to write your report. The summary, introduction and conclusions/recommendations are organised in a way that is standard for most reports in engineering. The body is organised as a series of topics and subtopics in a logical sequence; and there is some flexibility in your choice and sequence of these topics.

In most cases your lecturer or tutor will recommend that you format and write your report according to the ‘Report Writing Guide for Mining Engineers’ (Hagan & Mort 2007) which is based on the AusIMM ‘Guide to Authors’ (www.ausimm.com.au/Content/docs/ausimm_guide_to_authors_2011.pdf). Refer to these two guides for additional information on layout, format, conventions for notation, terminology and referencing.
